* recite Allahs' name "Ya Maatin" 70x (Ya Maatin maknanya Maha Sempurna Kekuatan-Nya)
* end with selawat and basmalah (3x/10x/100x)
* drink with intention to breastfeed.

Bagi kita yang dah lama bersalin ni jom jugalah kita amalkan..Hehehehehe..Amin.

risau??

Tidak!Tidak lagi.

Sejak akhir_Akhir-akhir ini saya hanya mampu mendapat kuantiti susu untuk kegunaan keesokan harinya sahaja.Namun saya tidak risau lagi. Saya sudah ada 'agenda' tersendiri. Simple...Yang mana ada yang itu guna..Kalau tak cukup baby sabar ya....

Macam zalim ke?

Saya berpendapat untuk usia anak saya, saya tidak menzalimi dia. Saya telah terangkan kepadanya apa yang kami sedang hadapi.

Susu masih ada. Ada juga hari yang saya mendapat hasil lebih dari pemintaan. Namun tidak lagi mampu membuat stok berpuluh/beratus botol namun bagi saya syukur Alhamdulillah...22 bulan telah kami tempuhi....

Tahukah anda, meningkatkan sesi mengepam merupakan pejana terbanyak dalam usaha saya mencukupkan kuantiti susu yang diperlukan.

Jika anda hadapi masalah kurang EBM tingkatkan usaha mengepam.

Buangkan perkataan malas dalam hidup anda. Anda mampu mengubahnya. (macam iklan TV plak)

Soalan lazim

1. Berapa lama EBM boleh tahan di dalam suhu bilik?

Susu yang baru diperah boleh tahan dalam suhu bilik 26 degree Celsius) selama 6 jam, dan pada suhu 19- 22 degree celsius selama lebih kurang 10 jam. Adalah disyorkan agar kita tidak membiarkan susu perahan berada dalam suhu bilik lebih dari 4 jam kerana kandungan susu ibu bagi setiap ibu adalah berbeza, dan suhu bilik adalah terlalu subjektif.

2. Berapa lama EBM tahan di dalam peti sejuk?

Jika anda tidak menggunakan EBM yang segar dalam tempoh 4 jam selepas perahan susu tersebut hendaklah disimpan di dalam peti sejuk. Susu perahan boleh disimpan di dalam peti sejuk (0- 4 degree celsius) selama 8 hari. Jika anda was-was cukuplah selama24 jam.

3. Berapa lama EBM beku tahan disimpan di dalam peti ais?

  • Bagi peti ais 2 pintu- 3 bulan
  • Peti ais satu pintu- 2 minggu
  • Deep freezer- 6 bulan

4. Apakah bekas penyimpanan terbaik untuk menyiimpan EBM.

Menurut pembacaan saya botol susu diperbuat dari kaca adalah yang terbaiknamun, susah hendak dikendalikan. Jadi kita boleh simpan EBM dalam

  • Botol susu biasa
  • Disposable liner (avent/playtex/medela/spectra etc)- Diikat dengan rubber band. Untuk penyimpana jangka masa lama eloklah di 'double' liner.
  • Disposable cup (example; avent)
  • Ada yang menyimpan di dalam bekas puding, sebelum digunakan bekas ini eloklah kiranya disterile terlebih dahulu.
  • Penyimpanan di dalam plastik 'ais krim malaysia' adalah tidak digalakkan kerana diragui kebersihannya.

5. Berapa kuantiti EBM setiap bekas?

Isikan dalam kuantiti 2-4oz setiap bekas. ( Bagi mengelakkan pembaziran)

6. Susu mana hendak digunakan dahulu?

FIFO..First In First Out. Labelkan setiap EBM.

Berikut adalah cara memberi bayi minum EBM yang boleh kita praktikkan.

  • syringe feeding - This is a good method to be sure a baby is getting food in the early days if it is clear the baby will need help getting his nutrition or if the baby is showing distress at the breast. The volume of colostrum is small and feeding the baby by syringe at the breast can assure he is getting enough. He feels successful at the breast as the underlying difficulties are being identified and fixed without the pressure to continue with a poor position or latch. It is often a short term tool, but can be used long term. It is the tool of choice for The Lactation Institute for babies who are not yet able to breastfeed exclusively
  • spoon feeding - If baby has to be fed away from the breasts a spoon can be used. In the early days when the baby is receiving a small volume of colostrum or milk. The spoon does not dwarf the volume and allows for slow and steady feeding. One spoon can be placed near the baby's lips and another spoon used to pour the colostrums or milk into the spoon.   • cup feeding - Cup feeding can work, even for a newborn. It is a good method for providing milk without introducing artificial nipples. For cup feeding milk is placed in a small, smooth rimmed, shallow cup. The infant can sip the milk from the cup that is placed at his lips. There are specially designed cups for cup feeding an infant or small medicine cups work well too. Medela makes a specialty feeding device called a SoftFeeder^(TM) for use when cup feeding is recommended. It is made from soft silicone and has a special reservoir that controls fluid. Some mothers use this long term when a baby needs milk in another way than direct from the breasts.
  • finger feeding - The finger feeding method involves a tube or syringe that delivers milk to the baby. It can be the tube of a supplemental feeding device or a special one made by Medela called The HazlebakerTM FingerFeeder. In the case of the tube, a small flexible tube is connected to a container of milk--think of it as a small soft drinking straw. It can be taped on a caregiverfs finger. The baby sucks on the finger and receives milk. When using a feeding syringe the baby sucks on the caregiver's finger and the milk from the syringe is released to run down the finger feeding the baby. These methods work well for incorporating suck retraining and other oral motor therapies
  • nipple shield -A nipple shield is a thin silicon disk with a nipple that is placed over the motherfs nipple. Nipple shields have been around for a long time. However the ancestors of todayfs thin flexible ones were not very effective. The older models did not have much flexibility and didn't allow for much milk transfer and breast stimulation. The reputation has remained to plague today's models. Nipple shields can be effective tools. Using nipple shields can result in keeping a baby happy at the breasts who would otherwise become frustrated, overwhelmed, or disinterested in the breast. Many babies need to have a supplemental feeding device in place either over or under the shield to keep the milk flow steady for them depending on why the nipple shield is needed. It is important that he gets the quantity of milk he wants at the flow rate he finds most enjoyable though, or he will quickly reject the shield, and perhaps the breast as well. Other mothers find their babies relax into nursing when they use a nipple shield to moderate mothers too-fast milk flow.

    Some other babies who do well on nipple shields are ones that are confident with bottle feeding but not breast feeding. A nipple shield may help them become more confident at the breast because the shield feels more like the bottle nipple they are used to.
    There are other reasons to use a nipple shield.

  • bottle and nipple feeding - Ini yang selalu orang kita guna dan selalu menjadi fikiran sempit bila berdepan dengan botol dan puting ini. Kalau anak menolak puting tiruan cubalah cup feeding, syringe feeding, spoon feeding.

Mengepam

Untuk meningkatkan kadar penghasilan susu, salah satu caranya ialah kerapkan stimulasi..

Bagaimana?

Kerap memberi bayi menghisap ataupun boleh kerapkan mengepam.

Berapa kali sehari?

Bagi ibu yang tidak bekerja tiada masalah dalam hal menyusukan bayi kerana anda akan sentiasa bersama bayi anda namun bagi ibu-ibu bekerja yang komited dengan penyusuan susu ibu, kekerapan mengepam/memerah susu merupakan langkah yang bijak bagi membantu meningkatkan kuantiti susu yang terhasil.

Cadangan saya,

Ketika di pejabat/tempat kerja pamlah 3 kali sehari dan di rumah juga 3 kali. Total 6 kali.

Sela masa bagi sesi pengepaman di pejabat,

2-3 jam sekali 10-25 minit setiap sesi.

Manakala di rumah pula,

  • Waktu subuh
  • Waktu maghrib (lepas maghrib)
  • Lewat malam

Bila pula hendak menyusukan bayi secara direct?

  • Ketika mengepam
  • Mengikut pemintaan bayi.

Apa yang saya lakukan,

Saya mengikut situasi, ada masa anak saya ‘benarkan’ saya mengepam ketika susukan dia ada masa dia tidak ‘izin’.

Haruslah kita faham bayi merupakan ‘pelakon utama’ dalam ‘filem’ ini, jadi kita perlu pertimbangkan ‘perasaan’ dia.

Berapa kali direct feeding?

Bergantung kepada keadaan, bagi kes anak saya 4-7 kali bagi hari bekerja dan ‘uncountable’ bagi hujung minggu.

Berapa lama?

Anak saya 10 minit hingga 2 jam.

My Fvorite Breastpump

Nak menulis tentang my favorite breastpump.

1. Avent ISIS.- Memang bagus pam ini. Kalau mengepam waktu breast ‘full’ memang sekejap sahaja boleh dapat 9oz, dan walaupun mengepam waktu tidak ‘full’ pun tetap boleh pump out 5-6oz. Cara menggunakannya amat mudah dan senang dibawa ke mana sahaja. Jika anda rasa lenguh mengepam, anda boleh juga berlatih menggunakan kedua-dua belah tangan anda. Saya sudah mampu mengepam menggunkan salah satu tangan, kiri atau kanan. Betullah ‘practice make perfect’. Saya sangat ‘enjoy’ menggunakan pump ini. Dengan menggerakkan jari jemari anda ‘pressing’ ‘handle pump ini sedikit sebanyak dapat juga kita ‘aktifkan’ otak kiri dan kanan kita. Hehehehehe.

2. Spectra 3 – Pump ini jenis elektrik. Juga amat mudah dikendalikan. Cuma bagi saya jika mengepam sewaktu ‘breast full’ paling ‘mujarab’, paling selesa. Berbeza dengan Avent ISIS spectra 3 lebih efisyen jika saya gunakan pada masa ‘breast full’ berbanding ketika tidak penuh. Boleh juga mengepam ketika tidak penuh namun hasilnya hanya separuh dari hasil menggunakan Avent ISIS. Walaubagaimana pun, spectra 3 adalah electric breastpump yang saya amat suka! Amat sesuai sekali digunakan ketika menyusukan bayi, sebelah diberi kepada bayi dan sebelah lagi mengepam susu dengan Spectra 3.

Susuilah anak anda dengan susu ibu kerana susu ibu merupakan makanan terbaik bayi anda.

    Mengandungi pelbagai protein, lemak, karbohidrat dan mineral yang saling bekerjasama

    EMPAT bulan pertama selepas kelahiran adalah saat paling penting dalam kehidupan setiap bayi dan kekurangan walau satu nutrien dalam tempoh ini boleh menjejaskan perkembangan si kecil, terutama sekian sistem saraf dan imun.

    Secara umumnya bayi memerlukan sekurang-kurangnya 30 jenis nutrien yang boleh diperoleh secukupnya dalam susu ibu. Susu ibu mengandungi pelbagai jenis protein, lemak, karbohidrat dan mineral yang saling bekerjasama dan gabungan ini dikenali sebagai bio-faktor.

    Walaupun kebaikan susu ibu diketahui sejak zaman berzaman, banyak perkara masih menjadi misteri kepada pakar perubatan dan saintis, terutama mengenai komposisi kandungannya yang berubah-ubah mengikut keperluan bayi.

    Secara umumnya susu (sama ada susu manusia atau haiwan, terutama lembu) ada banyak jenis protein yang dipanggil protein casein dan whey. Berbanding dua jenis protein ini, protein whey dianggap lebih baik kerana ia mudah dihadam.

    Sehingga kini banyak kajian dilakukan ke atas susu ibu, terutama terhadap kandungan proteinnya dan antara yang istimewa ialah penemuan komponen utama protein whey iaitu alfa-laktalbumin (protein alfa).

    Apa keunikan protein alfa? Ia sejenis protein mudah larut yang membabitkan banyak jenis asid amino perlu seperti triptofan, sistein dan leusin. Semua asid amino ini memainkan banyak fungsi penting dalam memastikan tumbesaran dan perkembangan bayi berlaku dengan sempurna.

    Tidak kira bagaimana corak pemakanan si ibu, kajian menunjukkan susu dihasilkan secara umumnya mengandungi kandungan protein alfa yang lebih kurang sama di seluruh dunia, kata Pensyarah Jabatan Sains Makanan dan Nutrisi Manusia, Universiti Illinois, Profesor Eric Louis Lien.

    Keperluan protein bayi adalah sangat khusus. Kekurangan satu jenis amino asid boleh menjejaskan perkembangan mereka secara keseluruhan. Setakat ini, hanya susu ibu boleh membekalkan semua keperluan bayi dan belum ada susu formula dapat menandinginya.

    Susu ibu ada komposisi asid amino yang tepat mengikut umur bayi. Ini sebabnya Pertubuhan Kesihatan Sedunia (WHO) menyarankan wanita menyusukan bayi secara eksklusif sekurang-kurangnya enam bulan supaya anak mendapat semua manfaat yang diperlukan dalam tempoh awal kehidupan mereka, katanya.

    Uniknya, kandungan susu, khususnya protein alfa, tidak banyak berbeza, walaupun corak pemakanan tidak sama. Kajian ke atas 450 sampel susu ibu dari Amerika Syarikat, United Kingdom, Australia, Jepun, Filipina, Chile, Kanada, China dan Mexico mendapati tahap protein alfa agak sama, iaitu dengan purata 2.5 g/l.

    Perbezaan diet (contohnya bagi wanita Kanada yang banyak makan daging dengan wanita China (nasi dan sayur-sayuran) tidak menunjukkan perbezaan ketara kandungan protein alfa dalam susu ibu.

    Bagaimanapun, Dr Lien tidak menolak amalan pemakanan yang sangat buruk boleh menjejaskan kualiti susu ibu, terutama paras protein, sesetengah jenis vitamin dan mineral.

    Namun, perkara ini jarang berlaku kerana kebanyakan wanita kini mempunyai kesedaran tinggi terhadap penjagaan makanan ketika mengandung.

    Namun, bukan semua wanita dapat menyusukan anak secara eksklusif selama enam bulan. Ramai ibu bekerja beralih kepada susu formula sebagai makanan alternatif sementara mereka di pejabat dan kembali memberi susu badan apabila pulang ke rumah.

    Tindakan ini disifatkan amalan baik kerana bayi masih boleh mendapat manfaat susu ibu. Untuk menyaingi kebaikan susu ibu, kebanyakan pengusaha terpaksa meningkatkan tahap protein.

    Dr Lien berkata, secara umumnya susu ibu mengandungi 60 peratus protein whey dan 40 peratus protein casein, manakala susu lembu mengandungi 20 peratus protein whey dan 80 peratus protein casein.

    Dalam susu formula (susu lembu) kandungan protein alfa hanya sekitar 0.5 g/l dan 1.3 g/l (dalam susu formula diperkaya protein whey) berbanding 2.4 g/l dalam susu ibu.

    Untuk menyamai kebaikan susu ibu, pengusaha cuba meningkatkan kandungan protein dalam susu formula. Kandungan protein susu formula biasanya lebih tinggi (antara 14 hingga 18 g/l) berbanding hanya 9 hingga 11 g/l dalam susu ibu.

    Namun, kandungan protein berlebihan ini ada keburukannya kerana boleh menyebabkan beberapa masalah atau tekanan kepada sistem pencernaan dan organ bayi yang masih kecil untuk bekerja lebih kuat.

    Malah, kajian dilakukan untuk membandingkan kesan ketoleranan usus (GI) antara susu ibu dan formula. Didapati bayi yang diberikan susu ibu tidak banyak mengalami masalah GI seperti sembelit, sakit perut, asid refluks, perubahan pada najis, cirit-birit, gangguan pada rektum (bahagian akhir usus besar) dan keradangan usus.

    Justeru, kata Dr Lien, wanita perlu menyusukan bayi mereka sekurang-kurangnya enam bulan secara eksklusif dan penyusuan boleh diteruskan selagi terdaya kerana walaupun selepas dua tahun, susu ibu masih banyak khasiatnya.

    >Kesan protein berlebihan

    Tekanan metabolik.
    Muatan berlebihan ke atas buah pinggang bayi.
    Insulinogenik (berlebihan asid amino merangsang badan menghasilkan lebih banyak insulin, sedangkan ia tidak diperlukan).
    Mengubah kandungan air dalam badan.
    Kemungkinan mengalami obesiti.

Saya pula buat-buat merajuk, tidak mempelawa....Dan akhirnya dia sendiri meminta. Ketagih agaknya.

Anak saya memang tidak minum susu formula.Jadi masalah sukakan susu formula tidak ada.

Apa yang saya buat bila anak saya menolak EBM.

1. Anak saya tidak suka puting tiruan. Kami berikan dia botol bersudu...

2. Anak saya mogok EBM. EBM tidak diberikan langsung sehingga dia sendiri memintanya.

Adakala anak kita tak mahu EBM kerana dia sudah kenyang makan makanan lain..bubur nasi/roti.

Bagi kanak-kanak yamg sudah mengambil makanan pejal, mungkin selera terhadap susu perahan sudah berkurang. Kalau hendak dipastikan, bolehlah kurangkan kuantiti 'solid food' banyakkan EBM....hehehehe

Lactogenic Foods and Herbs

What mothers eat can influence their milk supply

Around the world and throughout history, mothers have known that certain foods support their milk production. These foods were valued in earliest cultures and highlighted in mythology. Mother Goddesses were associated with barley grain, the almond, coconut, lotus, the elder tree, and many other plants and foods that were used historically to increase milk production.

Today, mothers dealing with low milk supply are again interested to learn how foods and herbs can support their milk production. Experts who work closely with low-supply mothers report that certain foods influence milk supply for some mothers. These so-called “lactogenic foods and herbs” are the subject of this article.

Dietary Guidelines Following Birth

Getting a good start the first few weeks after birth can be helpful in supporting the onset and development of a mother’s milk supply:

  • Get enough to eat. Simply eating regularly and getting enough calories will support your milk supply.
  • Get enough to drink, but not too much. Between 2 – 3 quarts a day is a good goal to aim for. Some mothers discover they need much more, and some find that they need to get “just enough” fluids to maintain an optimal milk supply.
  • Eat at least one warm meal per day that includes a source of protein, a portion of green salad, a grain such as millet or rice, and cooked vegetables such as yam, carrot, and fennel.
  • Spice moderately with lactogenic spices, for instance with sea-salt or gomasio, with dill or caraway, or basil and marjoram, and, if tolerated, with garlic.
  • Avoid food that is hard to digest such as fried or extremely fatty food.
  • Take probiotic yogurt or lactobacilli supplements to protect your intestinal flora and to help prevent colic and allergy in your baby(1).
  • Get healthy fats such as butter and olive oil, and remember to supplement with essential fatty acids.
  • Herbs useful after birth include stinging nettle to rebuild the blood lost during birth, turmeric, to help prevent breast inflammation, oat-straw, to nurture the nerves and to help prevent nervous exhaustion. These herbs also increase milk supply, so keep an eye on your supply and reduce or increase your dosage of these herbs as necessary.
  • If you lost a lot of blood during birth, avoid taking ginger for several weeks.
  • A traditional Chinese remedy used in the early postpartum is homemade chicken soup, simmered with the bones for several hours and rich with chicken fat, taken only once a week—otherwise, it is said to over-stimulate the baby. This remedy is reputed to prevent depression, to restore a mother's vitality, and to help develop an abundant milk supply.

Individual Dosage Requirements

Mothers have individual needs when it comes to lactogenic foods and herbs. Although most mothers produce milk well without having to consider their use at all, a few mothers find that they need to take a good amount every day, and that they may need to take a high dosage for two to four days to kick-start lactation.

As a breastfeeding mother gathers experience about her unique reaction to foods and herbs, she will learn the dosage that works best for her, both for building and for maintaining milk supply.

All mothers should consider the following: If you do not have low milk supply, and you take an abundance of herbs and foods to increase your supply, you may create unnecessary difficulties for yourself such as over-supply, engorgement, plugged ducts, or mastitis. Your baby may develop colic due to too much foremilk, or sucking difficulties due to an overly strong let-down reflex, both of which are common with over-supply. Use these foods and herbs wisely, and reduce or stop their use if you notice such problems.

LACTOGENIC FOODS

Lactogenic foods support lactation for many reasons. Eating sufficient calories and getting an abundant supply of nutrients is helpful in itself for lactation, but these foods also contain substances that interact with and support the chemistry of lactation. These substances include phytoestrogen, natural plant sedatives, plant sterols and saponins, and tryptophan, among others. In addition, a rich supply of minerals and a good balance of fats ensure that the mother’s cells and nerves are functioning at an optimal level.

Vegetables

Fennel

Fennel can be eaten raw or cooked, for instance, steamed, or sautéed in butter and then simmered in a bit of water. Fennel seed is well-known as an herb to increase milk production. The vegetable, containing the same pharmacologically active volatile oils, acts as a gentler support.

Carrot, Beet, Yam

These reddish vegetables are full of beta-carotene, needed in extra amounts during lactation. Carrot seed has been used as a galactagogue, and the vegetable, also containing the volatile oils and phytoestrogen, acts as a gentler support. The beet is a wonderful source of minerals and iron. Taking raw beet can help alleviate iron deficiency. These vegetables are naturally sweet, and they support the liver.

Dark Green Leafy Vegetables

Dark green vegetables are a potent source of minerals, vitamins and enzymes, as well as phytoestrogen that support lactation. Dandelion and stinging nettle leaves are diuretic, and can help reduce edema during pregnancy and after birth. They can be plucked from your garden in early spring and eaten whole, chopped into salad, or used to make tea. Stinging nettle can be harvested for salad or cooked as spinach. In your market, you'll find arugula, beet leaves, kale, Swiss chard, spinach, chicory, collard greens and others.

Grains and Legumes

Grains and legumes have a long history as galactagogues. The most commonly used grains include oats, millet, barley and rice. Oats are the most widely used lactogenic food in the US. Legumes to include in your diet are chickpea, mung beans and lentils.

Nuts

Nuts that support milk supply include almonds, cashews, and macadamia nuts. As much as possible, eat raw nuts, not roasted or salted. The taste of raw nuts will grow on you.

Oils and fats

Healthy fats play a vital role in cellular and neural metabolism. The kinds of fats a mother eats will influence the composition of fats in her milk. Please see the article “Dietary Tips for Pregnancy and the Postpartum” for more information.

The renowned expert in fats, Mary G. Enig, suggests that mothers get regular and substantial dosages of butter and coconut oil. In addition, use cold-pressed virgin olive oil, and take equal amounts of cold-pressed sesame oil and flaxseed oil in salads.

One way to balance the fats is to dribble a quarter teaspoon of olive oil, flaxseed oil, sesame oil, and a thin slab of butter over meals. Be sure to eliminate unhealthy fats such as partially hydrogenated vegetable oils and transfatty acids from your diet, as these will also enter your milk.

Lactogenic beverages include getting enough plain water to hydrate the body, drinking commercial lactation teas, non-alcoholic beer, ginger ale, Rivella, and natural herbal root-beers from your health food store. Check out coffee substitutes based on the lactogenic grain barley, such as CARO, Roma, Caffix, Pero or Dandy Blend. These imitation coffees usually also contain chicory or dandelion, plus malt—ingredients that are all lactogenic. A recipe for "Barley Water," a potent lactogenic beverage, is at the bottom of this article.

Condiments

Garlic

Garlic is famous for its medical benefits, and has a long history as a galactagogue.

In one study, babies were seen to latch on better, suckle more actively, and drink more milk when the mother had garlic prior to nursing(2). If you do not wish to eat garlic, try adding a capsule of garlic extract to a meal eaten about an hour before breastfeeding.

If you would like to introduce garlic to your diet, and are not used to eating garlic, introduce it very slowly and observe your baby’s reaction. Take only 1 – 2 cloves per day. These can be chopped or pressed through a garlic press into any food after it has finished cooking. Try it in vegetables, rice, grains, pulses, salad sauce, spaghetti sauce, or other sauce.

Our culture does not encourage eating garlic, and many people do not tolerate garlic well (or onions, another food which is traditionally lactogenic). For this reason, garlic is not recommended by the American Herbal Product’s Association while breastfeeding except under the guidance of a qualified herbalist. However, if you do tolerate garlic there is no reason that you should not benefit from it. Take garlic in moderation as do mothers all over the world.

Caution: Do not combine with anticoagulants, as garlic has blood-thinning actions.

Danger: Babies and small children should never be given garlic in any form, whether fresh, dry, powdered or in capsules, to chew, swallow, eat or suck on. Garlic is highly caustic to delicate body tissues, and rubbing it in one’s nose or eyes could be painful and dangerous. Babies will benefit from the garlic a mother eats, and that reaches him through her milk.

Ginger

Ginger is helpful for the letdown and milk flow. Some mothers benefit from drinking ginger ale. Even commercial ginger ale is flavored with “natural flavoring” that is real ginger.

Warning: Do not use ginger or ginger ale in the early postpartum if there was significant blood loss during birth. Do not take ginger immediately after birth due to danger of hemorrhaging.

Caution: Ginger tends to compound and increase the effects of medication being taken. Talk to your doctor if you are taking medication, especially diabetic, blood-thinning, or heart medicine.

Spices

Spices in your kitchen can be used to support milk production. Try adding marjoram and basil to your meals, and anise, dill or caraway. Black pepper, taken in moderation, is helpful.

Turmeric

This powdered yellow root gives curry its yellow color and basic flavor. A potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, turmeric is being studied in connection with the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatism, and cancer. Turmeric has lactogenic properties and can also be taken to help prevent inflammatory conditions. One half teaspoon of turmeric a day may help prevent inflammation in the breasts.
Caution: Some herbalists warn that pregnant women should not use turmeric if they are at risk for miscarriage.

SPECIAL FOODS

Oats (Avena Sativa)

The humble oat is one of our most nutritious foods, and contains proteins, vitamins, minerals and trace elements that nourish the nerves, support the metabolism of fats, and uplift the spirit. In traditional medicine, both the seed and the leaf—called oat-straw—are taken. Oats are prescribed as a nervine tonic in the treatment of nervous exhaustion. In Europe, women traditionally take oats after birth. Oats are taken today in the US to increase milk production, both as food and as a supplement. Like other galactagogues, oats are antidepressant, antispasmodic, and they increase perspiration.

Allergy: Occasional. Persons sensitive to gluten in wheat are frequently able to tolerate oats.

Dosage and Preparation:

Taking large dosages of oats is helpful in kick-starting milk production.

Oatmeal can be taken for breakfast or an afternoon snack.

Oat-straw is especially rich in minerals. It is available as capsules or as an ingredient in so-called “green-drinks.” Take as indicated on the package.

Fluid extract: 3 – 5 ml (15 – 35 drops), three times a day.

Nutritional and Brewer's Yeast

Nutritional or brewer’s yeast frequently leads to a significant boosts in a mothers’ milk supply. Mothers sometimes say that they feel much more energetic and emotionally balanced while taking yeast. This may signal a lack of essential nutrients in their diet, in particular, chromium, vitamin B complex, and especially vitamin B12, found in some brands of fortified nutritional yeast. Brewer’s and nutritional yeast also contain protein and good levels of phytoestrogen.

Allergy: Persons who are allergic to yeast should avoid these products.

Side-effects: Occasionally, mothers or babies become gassy, more so with brewer’s yeast than nutritional yeast. To be on the safe side, start with a small dosage and slowly increase.

Green Drinks

Green foods are reputed to increase the fat content of breastmilk. Some mothers supplement with chlorophyll. So-called "green drinks" can be very helpful. Their ingredients include barley-grass, alfalfa leaf, spirulina, corellas, kelp, oat-straw and other herbs with lactogenic and medicinal properties.

Caution: Chlorella, a common ingredient in commercial green-drinks, is used by medical specialists to chelate (remove) heavy metals from the body, especially mercury. If not taken at the correct dosage, chlorella can lead to an increase of mercury in the bloodstream and probably in a mother’s milk as well. It is wise to choose green-drinks that only contain a low percent of chlorella.

Green Papaya

Green papaya is taken as a galactagogue across Asia. It is a superb source of enzymes, vitamins, and minerals, including vitamins C, A, B, and E. Green papaya is the unripe fruit, and it needs to be simmered until soft. Green papaya can also be taken in supplement form.

Allergy: Persons allergic to latex may be allergic to papaya and other fruit.

Caution: Persons taking Warfarin should consult with their doctor before taking papaya supplements.

Sesame Seed

Large, black sesame seeds are used to increase milk production across Asia. Husked, light-colored sesame seeds are also effective and easier to digest. Sesame seed "butter" known as Tahini can be found in health food stores. Sesame is our most potent vegetable source of calcium!

Allergy: Allergy to sesame is becoming more common.

Spirulina

Spirulina is a non-toxic variety of blue-green algae. It has been farmed in lakes and ponds as a food source for thousands of years. It is valued for its proteins, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, chlorophyll, and essential fatty acids. Spirulina's nutrients are easily absorbed, even when a person’s digestion is not up to par.

It is important that spirulina be cultivated on a farm that is not located in waters that are contaminated, in particular with heavy metals. It is also advisable not to use spirulina that has been genetically ‘improved.’ Spirulina and other “green foods” may increase the fat-content of breastmilk.

Note: It is not wise to rely on spirulina as a source of B12.

Barley Water

Barley-water is used medicinally to treat colds, intestinal problems (both constipation and diarrhea) and liver disorders. It was recorded in Greek medicine two thousand years ago as a galactagogue. Taken for a week or two, it often helps mothers with chronic low milk supply. Make a pot in the morning and drink it throughout the day, warming each cup and sweetening it with a natural sweetener as desired.

Barley-water can be made with whole grain or pearl barley. Barley flakes can also be used, though these have been processed and are possibly less potent than the whole or pearled grain.

Preparation:

  • Quick-and-easy: 1/2 cup of flakes or pearled barley can be simmered in 1 quart of water for twenty minutes.
  • Long-and-intensive: 1 cup of whole or pearled barley is simmered in 3 quarts of water for up to 2 hours. About half the liquid should cook off. Some recipes call for only 1/2 hour cooking time. However, the longer the barley simmers and the more pinkish (and slimier) the water becomes, the more of the ‘cream’ will enter the water and the stronger the medicinal effect will be.
  • If the barley water becomes too thick to drink comfortably, add in more water.
  • When finished, remove from the stove and sieve off the water. The grain is now tasteless and can be thrown out.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of fennel powder or steep 2 – 3 teaspoons of fennel seeds for ten minutes in the barley-water before drinking.
  • The traditional recipe calls for fennel seed. I personally find that powdered fenugreek seed is tastier than fennel in barley-water.

Honey and Baby

Honey is not safe for babies under the age of one.

Honey can harbor the botulinum spore. This spore, under the right conditions, can grow and give off a deadly toxin. The spore is inhibited from growing in environments of high acidity. The acidity of an infant's digestive system is not high enough to prevent the growth of the spore. By the time a baby is one year old, stomach acidity has risen closer to that of an adults, and is at a level that would inhibit the growth of the spore.

It's true that honey should not be fed to infants younger than 1 year old. Clostridium bacteria that cause infant botulism usually thrive in soil and dust. However, they can also contaminate certain foods — honey in particular. Infant botulism can cause muscle weakness, with signs like poor sucking, a weak cry, constipation, and an overall decreased muscle tone (floppiness).

Parents can reduce the risk of infant botulism by not introducing honey into their baby's diet until after the first birthday. As kids get older, their bodies are better able to handle the bacteria.

Feeding honey to your baby could be harmful if he or she is younger than 12 months of age. Honey could be the cause of a rare type of food poisoning called infant botulism--a serious, even deadly, illness. Honey is the food most commonly found to contain the bacteria causing botulism. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that honey should not be added to the food, water, or formula that is fed to infants younger than 12 months of age. This recommendation includes foods processed with honey.

Honey is a known source of bacterial spores called Clostridium botulinum that produce a toxin which can cause infant botulism. These spores can also be found in soil, water, uncooked food, and even household dust. Infant botulism can occur from breathing in vacuum cleaner dust, but eating honey is the number one preventable cause. While honey is safe for infants over 12 months of age, infants under 12 months of age have not yet developed beneficial bacteria in their digestive tracts that can control botulism spores. Therefore, do not add honey to baby food, water, formula, or medicine. Do not dip a baby's pacifier in honey. Even the honey in some processed foods can cause this problem. After an infant eats the spores of this bacteria, the disease can occur within a few hours or up to a week after the exposure.

Symptoms of infant botulism include weakness in the neck, arms, or legs; inability to suck or cry normally; inability to feed or swallow; and persistent constipation. The first symptom is constipation, which can appear three to 30 days following ingestion of honey. The next symptoms observed are listlessness, decreased appetite, and a weakened cry over the next several days. Gagging and sucking reflexes diminish and the child moves less and less. Infant botulism frequently causes an infant to have an unusual breathing pattern, which often requires putting the infant on a ventilator to help with breathing.

Most infants recover from botulism with hospital care. However, if infant botulism is not treated immediately, it could result in death. Hospital care is necessary. Identifying the botulism toxin in the stool is needed for proper diagnosis. This toxin can cause nerve damage for weeks or even months. Neither antibiotics nor antitoxin have proven beneficial in treating infant botulism and may even make the illness worse. There is also a link between infant botulism and SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), because breathing is affected in the most severe stages of the illness. It is believed to be the cause of death in 10% of SIDS cases. As children get older, the stomach acid, bacteria, and the intestinal tract mature to make them less susceptible to the toxins that botulism spores produce. The single most effective way to prevent infant botulism is to avoid giving honey to infants younger than 12 months of age.

Hukum Menyusukan....

SAYA seorang ibu dan masih menyusukan anak yang berumur dua tahun. Ramai orang berkata, tidak elok terus menyusukan anak yang umurnya melebihi dua tahun. Malah, ramai juga yang melarang menyusukan anak jika kita hamil lagi.

Apa pandangan Islam dalam hal ini? Bagaimana pula jika wanita itu mengandung setiap tahun? Adakah dia perlu berhenti memberi susu badan kepada anaknya dan menggantikan dengan susu formula?

Jawapan:

Penyusuan susu badan ibu sangat digalakkan dalam agama Islam. Bukan saja susu ibu baik daripada sudut kesihatan anak, tetapi ia boleh menjadi penjarak kehamilan bagi ibu.

Tiada tegahan dalam agama jika ibu masih mahu menyusu anak sehingga lebih umur dua tahun. Cuma yang disarankan dalam al-Quran ialah masa terbaik untuk memberi susu badan ialah selama dua tahun.

Tidak menjadi kesalahan agama juga mahupun daripada segi kesihatan terus menyusukan badan, walaupun hamil. Tiada istilah minum susu hak orang lain yakni minum susu bakal adik yang akan tiba seperti yang dikatakan setengah pihak kerana hak susu anak yang lahir ialah sebaik saja dia dilahirkan. Selama mana wanita itu mempunyai susu untuk diberikan pada anak, berilah kepadanya.

Tips memberi ubat

Anak saya amat benci akan ubat! Kalau diberi ubat pasti dia akan muntahkan. Jadi dari sini datanglah idea bagaimana hendak menangani bayi muntahkan ubat.

1. Walaupun ditulis 'after food' saya bagi 'before food' Caranya, masukkan ubat ke dalam mulutnya dan berikan dia susu.Dia memang tidak akan menolak susu. Maka dia akan menelan kesemuanya.

Kalau diberi 'after food' dia memang akan muntahkan semua isi perutnya.

Bolehkah beri ubat after food?

Tiada pilihan lain. Saya ada bertanya kepada doctor tentang hal ini.Doctor kata tiada masalah kerana kita akan susukan selepas itu.

2. Jika terdapat banyak jenis ubat untuk diberikan mulakan dengan memberi ubat yang tidak sedap terlebih dahulu.

Mereka akan muntahkan ubat yang tidak sedap, jadi bagi mengelakkan ubat yang tidak sedap dimuntahkan..selepas beri ubat yang tidak sedap itu berilah ubat yang lebih sedap. Oleh kerana dia sukakan ubat yang sedap secara tidak sengaja ubat yang tidak sedap tadi turut ditelan.

Bagaimana hendak tahu ubat itu sedap atau tidak.

Si ibu atau bapa hendaklah merasanya.

Rasanya: Mengikut lidah saya, rasanya seakan-akan tebu tapi tidaklah semanis tebu.Sedap!

The water chestnut, also called the Chinese water chestnut or the water caltrop, is a tuber vegetable that resembles a chestnut in color and shape. Although it is most commonly associated with Chinese cooking, it is now gaining in popularity as a cooking ingredient in many different ethnic meals. Originating in Southeast Asia, water chestnuts are the roots of an aquatic plant that grows in freshwater ponds, marshes and lakes, and in slow-moving rivers and streams. Currently, water chestnuts are grown in Japan, Taiwan, China and Thailand as well as in Australia. When harvesting water chestnuts, much labor is involved. Because of this, water chestnuts are fairly expensive to purchase, especially in a processed or canned form. However, processed and canned water chestnuts are the most common form used for producing and mass-marketing water chestnuts to consumers. You can easily purchase these products in most supermarkets and grocery stores. You can also purchase fresh water chestnuts, which are more difficult to find, at some specialty vegetable stores and ethnic markets. When purchasing fresh water chestnuts, however, know who your supplier is first to ensure that the tubers, which you are buying, are fresh.

Once you have purchased your water chestnuts, if canned, you can store them unopened in your home pantry. If a can has been opened or if you have purchased fresh water chestnuts, you can store them for up to one week in your refrigerator. However, you must keep the water chestnuts in a bowl of water. The water must also be changed every day in order for them to remain fresh while they are being stored.

Water chestnuts can be used in a variety of recipes because they have a starchy taste that is fairly neutral. Some people claim that their flavor is similar to a bland nut. Water chestnuts also have a firm and crispy texture, which adds to their appeal as an ingredient in stir-fries, salads, or any meals where the vegetables to be used must have a crunchy consistency. Some common uses for the water chestnut include the following:

* combining them with vegetables, such as bamboo shoots and snow peas, then adding soy sauce and other seasoning to make a stir fry

* adding them chopped to soups, salads, rice, and stuffing

* wrapping them whole with bacon then baking the pieces to serve as an appetizer or as a side dish.

Water chestnuts can also be used as a healthy and nutritious snack. For a quick treat, open a can of water chestnuts and rinse the water chestnuts thoroughly under cold water. Dry any remaining water off of the water chestnuts then eat them raw. Water chestnuts are also great for those who are looking for health-conscious vegetable alternatives because they contain little fat as well as provide a good source of fiber and of vitamin B. Additionally, water chestnuts contain a fair amount of the following minerals: calcium, iron, potassium, and zinc. They also offer a flavorful alternative to dieters who are looking to liven-up their meals by using unique and low-fat vegetables and foods. One cup of water chestnuts contains approximately 135 calories.

Hari ini Jumaat 23 March 2007. Alhamdulillah.Minggu ini mampu juga saya 'hasil'kan susu buat Akif. Stok di dalam freezer hanya ada 6 botol. Tetapi tidak mengapa.Jika hari ini saya dapat 4-5 botol, esok 4 botol..Insya Allah semuanya akan kembali seperti sedia kala.

Pesanan saya:Kepada ibu-ibu yang menghadapi masalah milk supply, jangan cepat berputus asa. Teruskan usaha.Pasti berjaya.Banyakkan minta pertolonganNYA.

Memang ini bukan kali pertama, namun inilah kali pertama saya hadapi masalah sekronik ini. Bila dikenang kembali, banyak sungguh dugaannya.

Pernah:

  • Buang berpuluh-puluh botol EBM kerana keputusan bekalan electric
  • Milk supply merudum sampai sehari dapat sebotol sahaja.
  • Milk supply merudum stok pula tak ada..Dan banyak lagi.Jika dikenang akan jadi tidak percaya...

Alhamdulillah....Rezeki dariNYA masih ada untuk kami.

Warming Breast Milk

Microwaving breastmilk, or heating it on the stove, can cause a loss of Vitamin C content, along with loss of some of the milk's special anti-infective properties. The higher the temperature, the more pronounced the effect. It's important to remember that uneven heat distribution, from microwave warming, resulting in "hot spots" can be hazardous. The center of the fluid may be much hotter and the milk may scald your or your baby.

You do bring up an interesting point. Though parents are told not to microwave breastmilk for several reasons, we often forget to mention that heating milk on the stove can also be problematic.

My Scary Experience

Di sini saya ingin berkongsi sedikit pengalaman yang amat menakutkan saya.

My milk supply tiba-tiba 'drop', manakala my son tiba-tiba minum susu dengan banyaknya (susu=ebm), Kalau 'direct feeding' Alhamdulillah masih mencukupi.

Pada hari Jumaat lepas (16 March 2007) pukul 6:55am, saya masukkan 6 botol EBM ke dalam 'cooler bag' akif untuk dibawa ke Taskanya. Ketika itu baki EBM hanya ada 2 botol di dalam freezer.

Hati makin gundah gulana, namun saya yakinkan diri, saya ada 3 hari untuk terus mengepam.

16 March 2007 pukul 7:30pm, saya masukkan 3 botol EBM ke dalam freezer menjadikan jumlah keseluruhan 5 botol EBM. Hanya cukup untuk sehari, Untuk ke kedudukan 'selamat' , saya perlukan sekurang-kurangnya 15 botol EBM. Sempatkah?

17 March 2007, saya dapat 3 botol EBM..Menjadikan jumlah keseluruhan 8 botol EBM.Aduh....

18 March 2007, Saya hanya mampu dapat 2 botol EBM. Walaupun saya kerap mengepam, hasilnya tetap sama. Saya tetap teruskan usaha. Segala makanan yang dikatakan menambahkan penghasilan susu saya ambil. Rasa macam 'tong drum' plak.

19 March 2007, saya dapat lagi sebotol EBM di subuh hening Alhamdulillah. Menjadikan stok EBM keseluruhan 11 botol.

Saya ambil 5 botol dan bawa ke Taska Akif....Baki di dalam freezer hanya ada 6 botol EBM.

Saya cuba elakkan diri dari memikirkan tentang EBM.

Saya pesan kepada Akif, jika susu tak cukup, akif jangan menangis, tunggu mummy balik dan akif berdoalah agar segala kerja mummy di office berjalan lancar Insya Allah mummy balik awal.

Akif seperti biasa..Akan menganguk-angguk dan senyum, salam dan lambai...

Di pejabat saya tingkatkan sesi mengepam, dari normal 2X ke 3X....

Alhamdulilah saya dapat kumpulkan 5 botol EBM, cukup untuk penggunaan sehari.

Ketika mengambil Akif di Taska, pengasuhnya memberitahu ada sebotol lagi EBM yang belum digunakan. Maknanya Akif hanya minum 4 botol EBM.Mmmm...

Setelah mengambil Akif, seperti biasa dia akan minum susu di dalam perjalanan ke rumah.

Malamnya saya cuba meluangkan masa untuk mengepam, Akif seolah-olah tidak bersetuju, jadi saya batalkan plan saya itu. Saya berikan dia peluang direct feeding sepuasnya. Dan hasilnya pagi tadi, saya dapat mengepam keluar 2 botol EBM.

Pagi tadi saya bekalkan 6 botol EBM ke Taska menjadikan jumlah EBM di taska 7 botol dan EBM di rumah 7 botol. Insya Allah.......

Moral

Jika anda tiba-tiba mengalami masalah milk supply, jangan berputus asa. Jangan terlalu memikirkannya.Kerapkan sesi mengepam dan direct feeding.

Ini bukanlah kali pertama kali saya alami masalah ini, sudah kerap kali.Setiap kali masalah ini bakal menjelma saya sebenarnya sudah dapat menghidu akan kedatangannya. Memerhatikan stok EBM di dalam freezer yang makin susut, memikirkan expressed milk kuantiti yang makin berkurangan.

Namun ini bukan penghalang dan ini bukan melemahkan, semua ini makin menyemarakkan semangat untuk terus komited dalam dunia penyusuan susu ibu ini.

  2. fikirkan yang positif sahaja
  3. tidak memikirkan sangat tentang masalah ini.
  4. yakin dengan kemampuan diri
  5. sokongan padu dari suami

5 faktor di atas merupakan antara elemen penting bagi menghadapi saat-saat genting kekurangan susu mendadak.

Insya Allah kita sama-sama berusaha dan teruskan perkara murni ini.
